University of Reading

The University of Reading is a public research university in Reading, England, founded in 1926 and ranked #172 in the QS World University Rankings 2025. Its programmable footprint is small, real, and almost entirely scholarly: two OAI-PMH 2.0 harvesting endpoints on its own hosts — CentAUR (64,458 research outputs) and the Research Data Archive — plus the read-only EPrints dataset listings beside them. Both were probed live on 2026-09-01 and both are fully open, with no key, no registration and no advertised rate limit. There is no developer portal, no api.reading.ac.uk, no open-data portal and no OpenAPI, AsyncAPI or apis.json document published by the university anywhere. The institution does operate an Azure API Management gateway on its own domain (esb-prod-api.reading.ac.uk) but publishes no route through it. Its strongest institution-operated machine-readable surface after the repositories is identity: a SAML entity in the UK Access Management Federation (entityID https://reading.ac.uk/oala/metadata, scoped reading.ac.uk and reading.edu.my) and a Microsoft Entra ID tenant whose OpenID Connect discovery document is public. It is a registered DataCite member (provider PCLW) and holds a ROR identifier. Almost everything else a reader might mistake for a Reading API is a vendor's contract running under the university's name — Elsevier Pure, Talis Aspire, SirsiDynix Enterprise, ProQuest Summon, Springshare LibGuides — and those are recorded here as tenant relationships, not as the university's engineering.

University of Reading publishes 4 APIs on the APIs.io network, including CentAUR OAI-PMH Metadata API, Research Data Archive OAI-PMH Metadata API, CentAUR Repository REST Listings, and 1 more. Tagged areas include University, Higher Education, Education, Research, and Research Repository.

The University of Reading catalog on APIs.io includes 1 JSON-LD context.

University of Reading’s developer surface includes documentation, engineering blog, support, authentication, and 19 more developer resources.

Regulatory Posture applies to this provider. Its tags matched the Education & Research regime, so Regulatory Posture carries 15 points of the composite. If this regime is wrong for your business, say so on your provider repo — the applicability map is public and we will correct it.
Create-or-Update Ergonomics does not apply to this provider. The published contracts declare no write operations, and a read-only API cannot create-or-update. The facet is excluded from this provider's denominator entirely — not scored zero. A reference or data API is not deficient for being unable to upsert.
The six quality facets above are damped to 85 points between them, because the conditional facet above carries the other 15. That is why each facet's contribution is shown against a damped maximum: raising a quality facet moves the composite by 85% of its nominal weight, not 100%. The full arithmetic is at apis.io/rating/.
Improve this rating by publishing the missing artifacts — every area above can be raised, and the full rubric is at apis.io/rating/. Every facet and dimension name above is a link: it opens that measurement's own page — what it means, the exact checks that feed it, how the whole catalog distributes on it, and the providers at the top of it. This rating is computed from github.com/api-evangelist/university-of-reading: open an issue to ask a question, or submit a pull request to add artifacts. x-coverage:
  state: covered
  reason: covered
  generated: '2026-09-01'
  method: probed
detail: 'Every surface class the university pipeline hunts was probed on 2026-09-01 and the result is a small but complete
and honest profile. Two institution-operated machine-readable APIs exist and both work: the OAI-PMH 2.0 endpoints for
CentAUR (64,458 records) and the Research Data Archive, open with no credentials, alongside the read-only EPrints /rest/
listings whose per-record XML returns 401. There is no developer portal and no open-data portal — api.reading.ac.uk, data.reading.ac.uk,
opendata.reading.ac.uk and developer.reading.ac.uk do not resolve at all, and www.reading.ac.uk/llms.txt and /.well-known/security.txt
both 404. The university does run an Azure API Management gateway on its own domain (esb-prod-api.reading.ac.uk, resolving
to uks-common-p-001-apim.azure-api.net, with a UAT sibling) but every path probed returns APIM''s JSON 404 envelope: a
gateway with no published route. Identity is the strongest find — a UK Access Management Federation SAML entity, entityID
https://reading.ac.uk/oala/metadata, whose metadata is live in the federation MDQ, plus a public Entra ID OIDC discovery
document. Registry memberships are real and recorded: DataCite provider PCLW with four DOI prefixes, and ROR 05v62cm79.
The course catalogue and the Meteorology Department''s climate data services are genuinely institution-operated and genuinely
public, but both are HTML-only — the module catalogue is server-rendered with no JSON, and the climate services are multi-step
POST form wizards, with the newer Data Extractor still showing a 2018 "no data available yet" banner. Library discovery,
reading lists, LibGuides, the CRIS and timetabling are all vendor tenancies and are recorded as relationships, never as
Reading''s contracts; no Figshare tenancy exists — reading.figshare.com returns the same AWS WAF challenge as a nonsense
subdomain does, so the apparent host is not evidence. Two measurement traps worth naming: /cgi/search and /cgi/export
on centaur.reading.ac.uk answer HTTP 200 with an Anubis bot interstitial rather than the requested document, and www.reading.ac.uk
serves its 404s from /search/404.htm with a correct 404 status.'
