Mukuru

Mukuru is a Cape Town-headquartered, pan-African fintech and one of the continent's largest formal remittance providers, serving over 16 million customers across Southern, Eastern and Western Africa, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. Founded in 2004 to make sending money home faster and more affordable for the African diaspora, Mukuru now operates a broader financial services platform spanning international and domestic money transfers, the Mukuru Card (a prepaid card product), Mukuru Wallet (a mobile money wallet available in markets such as Botswana for airtime, electricity, and bill payments), Mukuru Pay (cash-based online checkout at retail partners), and Mukuru Funeral Cover (life insurance with cross-border repatriation benefits underwritten by Guardrisk Life). The company is licensed as a South African Financial Services Provider (FSP 45517) and registered Credit Provider (NCRCP9244), and reaches customers through a hybrid network of branches, retail booths, USSD, WhatsApp, web, and native Android, iOS, and Huawei AppGallery apps, supported by more than 320,000 pay-in and pay-out locations. An enterprise arm — branded under the Mukuru Enterprise / MukuruPay umbrella — offers collections and disbursements rails to businesses sending funds into or paying out across Africa. Mukuru does not publish a public developer API, OpenAPI specification, SDK, or open-source client; its Mukuru GitHub organization contains only archived forks of upstream infrastructure tooling (Drone, Helm, Puppet, PHP Docker images) and no Mukuru-authored libraries. Integrations with the Mukuru Enterprise platform are arranged through direct commercial engagement rather than a self-service developer program.

Mukuru is profiled on the APIs.io network. Tagged areas include Remittance, Money Transfer, Cross-Border Payments, Africa, and South Africa.

Mukuru’s developer surface includes signup flow, engineering blog, legal docs, GitHub presence, YouTube channel, and 29 more developer resources.

Regulatory Posture applies to this provider. Its tags matched the Payments regime, so Regulatory Posture carries 15 points of the composite. If this regime is wrong for your business, say so on your provider repo — the applicability map is public and we will correct it.
Create-or-Update Ergonomics could not be measured. We hold no machine-readable contract for this provider to read, so there is nothing to measure a write surface against. Excluded rather than scored zero: never-measured and measured-empty are different facts. Publishing an OpenAPI is what makes this facet — and several others — scorable at all.
The six quality facets above are damped to 85 points between them, because the conditional facet above carries the other 15. That is why each facet's contribution is shown against a damped maximum: raising a quality facet moves the composite by 85% of its nominal weight, not 100%. The full arithmetic is at apis.io/rating/.
Improve this rating by publishing the missing artifacts — every area above can be raised, and the full rubric is at apis.io/rating/. Every facet and dimension name above is a link: it opens that measurement's own page — what it means, the exact checks that feed it, how the whole catalog distributes on it, and the providers at the top of it. This rating is computed from github.com/api-evangelist/mukuru: open an issue to ask a question, or submit a pull request to add artifacts.
