Keio University

Keio University (慶應義塾大学) is a private research university in Tokyo, Japan, founded by Fukuzawa Yukichi in 1858 and the oldest institution of modern higher education in the country. Its programmable footprint is small, entirely non-commercial, and — unusually for this cohort — genuinely its own rather than a vendor's running under its name. Two surfaces are operated by Keio on Keio's hosts and are anonymously consumable today: KOARA, the institutional repository, which serves a live OAI-PMH 2.0 harvesting interface advertising Dublin Core and the NII junii2 schema across 100 faculty and research-centre sets; and the Media Center's Digital Collections, which serve IIIF Presentation 2.1 manifests and IIIF Image 2.0 Level 1 tiles for the university's digitised rare books, including all 656 folios of its Gutenberg 42-line Bible. Keio also operates its own Shibboleth/SAML identity provider, registered in the GakuNin federation since 2014 and republished into eduGAIN — the strongest institution-owned machine-readable artifact it has. Beyond those, the estate is a set of tenancies and registry memberships rather than engineering: K-RIS runs on Elsevier Pure, campus sign-on runs through an Okta tenant and an Extic-hosted SSO service, research data DOIs are minted through a Figshare consortium seat at DataCite, and two Keio units hold Crossref memberships in their own right. There is no developer portal, no API key, no changelog and no published OpenAPI anywhere in the estate; every contract in this repository was written by API Evangelist from live probes and is marked as such.

Keio University publishes 2 APIs on the APIs.io network: KOARA OAI-PMH Metadata API and Keio Media Center Digital Collections IIIF API. Tagged areas include Education, Higher Education, University, Japan, and Research.

The Keio University catalog on APIs.io includes 1 JSON-LD context and 1 Spectral governance ruleset.

Keio University’s developer surface includes engineering blog, code examples, authentication, YouTube channel, and 27 more developer resources.

Regulatory Posture applies to this provider. Its tags matched the Education & Research regime, so Regulatory Posture carries 15 points of the composite. If this regime is wrong for your business, say so on your provider repo — the applicability map is public and we will correct it.
Create-or-Update Ergonomics does not apply to this provider. The published contracts declare no write operations, and a read-only API cannot create-or-update. The facet is excluded from this provider's denominator entirely — not scored zero. A reference or data API is not deficient for being unable to upsert.
The six quality facets above are damped to 85 points between them, because the conditional facet above carries the other 15. That is why each facet's contribution is shown against a damped maximum: raising a quality facet moves the composite by 85% of its nominal weight, not 100%. The full arithmetic is at apis.io/rating/.
Improve this rating by publishing the missing artifacts — every area above can be raised, and the full rubric is at apis.io/rating/. Every facet and dimension name above is a link: it opens that measurement's own page — what it means, the exact checks that feed it, how the whole catalog distributes on it, and the providers at the top of it. This rating is computed from github.com/api-evangelist/keio: open an issue to ask a question, or submit a pull request to add artifacts. x-coverage:
  state: covered
  reason: covered
detail: 'Keio is a correctly thin but genuinely non-empty profile, and the 2026-09-01 pass moved it from one surface to
nine. Two institution-operated APIs are live, anonymous and fully consumable today — KOARA''s OAI-PMH 2.0 interface (all
six verbs probed, 100 sets, oai_dc and junii2) and the Media Center''s IIIF Presentation 2.1 and Image 2.0 Level 1 endpoints
(manifest, info.json and a rendered image request all 200). Keio also operates its own Shibboleth/SAML identity provider,
registered in GakuNin since 2014 and republished into eduGAIN, which is the institution-owned surface class this cohort
was most completely missing. Beyond those, the estate is tenancies and registry memberships, each recorded as a relationship
with the vendor''s contract deliberately withheld: Elsevier Pure behind K-RIS (whose /ws/api returns 404, so not even
the vendor''s interface is readable), an Okta tenant whose OIDC discovery is public but whose client registration is not
reachable, a Figshare repository evidenced through DataCite''s registry rather than through the bot-interstitialled host,
and DataCite, Crossref and ROR registrations. What Keio does not have is equally clear and was probed rather than assumed:
api.keio.ac.jp and data.keio.ac.jp do not resolve, there is no developer portal, no open-data portal, no public course
catalog or timetable API, no research-computing service catalog, no published OpenAPI or apis.json, no changelog, no status
page, no llms.txt, no MCP server, and the main web estate serves neither robots.txt nor security.txt. No probe was blocked
in a way that hid a finding; the only bot rejections encountered were LinkedIn''s 999 and Figshare''s 202, both platform
edges rather than facts about Keio.'
