University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo (東京大学, UTokyo) is Japan's oldest and largest national research university, founded in 1877, and ranks 28th in the QS World University Rankings. Like almost every institution in this cohort it operates no developer program: there is no API key, no OAuth server, no course or student-information API, no status page, and no OpenAPI, AsyncAPI or GraphQL schema on any host it owns. What it does operate — entirely on its own domain, with no vendor tenancy anywhere in the picture — is library and digital-humanities infrastructure, and that infrastructure is real and standards-conformant rather than nominal. Two OAI-PMH 2.0 endpoints answer live: the UTokyo Repository (self-hosted WEKO3, 69,549 records, seven metadata formats including JPCOAR 2.0 and DDI Codebook) and the Academic Assets Archives Portal (1,957 sets, thirteen years of persistent-deletion metadata). The Archives Portal also serves IIIF Presentation 2.1 manifests, a IIIF Image API 2.0 level2 service on iiif.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp, and DC-NDL item metadata as JSON-LD, CSV and refer/BibIX. The repository additionally exposes an undocumented but fully live JSON records interface. Beyond the library, the university operates three Shibboleth SAML 2.0 entities registered in GakuNin, Japan's academic access federation — the identity layer is the largest piece of machine-readable engineering the institution actually owns, and it is the piece that never appears in an API catalog. Two honest caveats define this profile: the only API documentation the university publishes exists in Japanese only, so an English-language survey finds nothing here at all; and the documented search API returns HTTP 403 to every external automated client, so it is blocked rather than absent.

University of Tokyo publishes 4 APIs on the APIs.io network, including UTokyo Academic Assets Archives Portal API, UTokyo IIIF Presentation and Image APIs, UTokyo OAI-PMH Metadata Harvesting, and 1 more. Tagged areas include University, Higher Education, Education, Japan, and Public Research University.

The University of Tokyo catalog on APIs.io includes 1 JSON-LD context and 1 Spectral governance ruleset.

University of Tokyo’s developer surface includes documentation, API reference, support, engineering blog, code examples, authentication, and 29 more developer resources.

Regulatory Posture applies to this provider. Its tags matched the Education & Research regime, so Regulatory Posture carries 15 points of the composite. If this regime is wrong for your business, say so on your provider repo — the applicability map is public and we will correct it.
The six quality facets above are damped to 85 points between them, because the conditional facet above carries the other 15. That is why each facet's contribution is shown against a damped maximum: raising a quality facet moves the composite by 85% of its nominal weight, not 100%. The full arithmetic is at apis.io/rating/.
Improve this rating by publishing the missing artifacts — every area above can be raised, and the full rubric is at apis.io/rating/. x-coverage:

detail: 'Every surface in this profile is operated by the University of Tokyo on a host under its own registrable domain
u-tokyo.ac.jp, and every one was verified with a live probe on 2026-08-19. No vendor tenancy exists to record: u-tokyo.figshare.com
    and utokyo.figshare.com return HTTP 202 with a zero-byte body, utokyo.pure.elsevier.com 301s to a hostname that does not
resolve, utokyo.instructure.com returns 404, and no Dataverse, Symplectic or Ex Libris tenant could be substantiated.
This institution is one of the minority in the cohort that runs its own repository software rather than buying a hosted
one, so the Figshare misattribution that defines this cohort simply does not apply here.

Two limits on the coverage, both about the deployment rather than about the institution. First, the documented search
API at /portal/search returned HTTP 403 to every external automated client tested — with a browser User-Agent, without
one, and from two independent network paths — so its parameters are transcribed from the university''s documentation and
could not be confirmed by response. Second, repository.dl.itc.u-tokyo.ac.jp returns HTTP 406 to browser-shaped User-Agents
and 200 to plain clients, an inverted block that would make the host read as dead to any crawler applying the usual retry
heuristic; it was probed correctly and is fully live.

The June 2026 profile of this institution recorded two surfaces and missed the rest because it read the English help page,
which says only "Only available in Japanese". The Japanese page at /portal/help/api carries the full parameter tables.
Searching the local language is what moved this profile from two surfaces to five.'
