Yale University

Yale University is a private Ivy League research university in New Haven, Connecticut, United States, ranked #16 in the QS World University Rankings. Its programmable footprint is real but sharply bifurcated, and it is one of the few institutions in this cohort that operates its own contracts rather than only buying them. On the open side Yale runs LUX (lux.collections.yale.edu), a cross-collection discovery platform serving Linked Art JSON-LD over more than 41 million cultural-heritage records, built and published openly by Yale's own project-lux engineering organization; Yale Dataverse (dataverse.yale.edu), a self-hosted research-data repository on Yale's own AWS infrastructure minting DOIs under Yale's own DataCite prefix 10.60600; IIIF Presentation 3.0 manifests from Yale University Library Digital Collections; and a signed SAML 2.0 Shibboleth identity-provider metadata document registered in InCommon. All four were probed live and answer anonymously. On the closed side, developers.yale.edu is a genuine institution-operated developer portal documenting eleven Enterprise (SOA) services and four Portal APIs — Buildings, Courses, Course Subjects, GatewayServiceMetrics — but Yale's own pages describe these as internal and private: the SOA tier uses basic authentication via a provisioned service account, and a Portal API key can only be requested by someone holding a valid Yale NetID. The gateway at gw.its.yale.edu is live and answers an anonymous call with "Invalid API Key", so the surface exists and is simply not open. An earlier profile of this repository described the Courses Web Service as returning "public information"; that is corrected here. Two further surfaces carry Yale's name but not Yale's engineering and are recorded as tenant relationships rather than as Yale contracts: EliScholar (elischolar.library.yale.edu), whose OAI-PMH endpoint is live but whose Identify response gives an Elsevier bepress Digital Commons admin contact, and the course catalog at courses.yale.edu / catalog.yale.edu, which is a Leepfrog CourseLeaf tenancy. Yale publishes no open-data portal, no llms.txt and no security.txt.

Yale University publishes 8 APIs on the APIs.io network, including LUX Collections Discovery — Search API, LUX Collections Discovery — Documents API, LUX Collections Discovery — Facets API, and 5 more. Tagged areas include University, Higher Education, Education, United States, and Ivy League.

The Yale University catalog on APIs.io includes 1 JSON-LD context and 2 Spectral governance rulesets.

Yale University’s developer surface includes documentation, API reference, support, GitHub presence, engineering blog, and 25 more developer resources.

Regulatory Posture applies to this provider. Its tags matched the Education & Research regime, so Regulatory Posture carries 15 points of the composite. If this regime is wrong for your business, say so on your provider repo — the applicability map is public and we will correct it.
The six quality facets above are damped to 85 points between them, because the conditional facet above carries the other 15. That is why each facet's contribution is shown against a damped maximum: raising a quality facet moves the composite by 85% of its nominal weight, not 100%. The full arithmetic is at apis.io/rating/.
Improve this rating by publishing the missing artifacts — every area above can be raised, and the full rubric is at apis.io/rating/. x-coverage:
  state: covered
  reason: institution_operated_surfaces_verified_gated_administrative_tier
detail: Yale is not a thin profile. Four institution-operated surfaces were probed and answered anonymously — LUX search
and configuration, the Yale Dataverse REST API, a Digital Collections IIIF Presentation 3.0 manifest, and the Shibboleth
IdP SAML metadata — and each is described by a contract in openapi/ with its operator settled. Three limits on this coverage
are recorded honestly rather than papered over. First, Yale's administrative estate (eleven Enterprise SOA services and
four Portal APIs) is documented in public but gated behind a Yale NetID, so it is inventoried from Yale's own documentation
and never described as callable. Second, the Blacklight JSON surface at collections.library.yale.edu/catalog.json returns
an empty HTTP 202 edge challenge to automated requests even with a browser User-Agent, so it is recorded as blocked at
the edge — a fact about our access, not about Yale. Third, LUX serves an identical 4200-byte single-page-app shell for
every /content/ route including a deliberately nonsensical one, so LUX content pages cannot be graded by status code and
are carried on the strength of the API's own declared contact URL plus the openly published project-lux source.

name: Yale Courses Web Service v3
  x-operator: institution
description: 'Returns course-offering information for a given termCode and subjectCode — titles, descriptions, instructors,
meeting times, prerequisites and distributional designations — in JSON or XML. Live and gated: an anonymous request to
the documented endpoint returned HTTP 400 "Invalid API Key" on 2026-08-19. A key requires registering an application in
the Yale Developer Portal, which requires a Yale NetID. The previous profile of this repository described the service
as returning "public information"; the payload may be public information but the surface is not public access, and that
    is corrected here.'

  name: Yale Enterprise (SOA) Services
  x-operator: institution
description: Eleven services delivered by Yale's Integration Competency Center covering Yale identities (People Hub — PeopleService,
GetPeopleService, LimitedPeopleService, SearchByIndividual, GetAppointmentService, GetChangesService), Chart of Accounts
(COAValidator in REST and SOAP, COASegmentService, GetRoles) and Workday Supervisory Organizations (GetSupervisoryOrgs).
Yale describes these as private APIs using basic authentication via a service account under specific request and data-governance
policies. Catalogued from Yale's own public documentation as an inventory of the institution's integration estate; none
is publicly callable and no contract is claimed.

description: 'EliScholar is Yale''s digital platform for scholarly publishing, and its OAI-PMH endpoint is live — Identify
returned protocol version 2.0 with repositoryName "EliScholar – A Digital Platform for Scholarly Publishing at Yale" and
an earliest datestamp of 2000-01-19, and ListSets enumerates Yale collections such as babylonian, arch2_theses and archipelagosjournal.

RECORDED AS TENANT, NOT INSTITUTION. The host elischolar.library.yale.edu is a CNAME to dcyalelib.bepress.com, and the
Identify response gives adminEmail dc-support@elsevier.com. The content, the collection policy and the institutional identity
are Yale''s; the protocol implementation and the operations are Elsevier''s bepress Digital Commons. This is a real and
valuable institutional fact — it is one of the few genuinely harvestable surfaces Yale''s name sits on — so the relationship
is recorded rather than deleted, and the vendor''s generic contract is not saved under Yale''s slug.'

name: Yale Course Search and University Publications (CourseLeaf tenancy)
  x-operator: tenant
description: Yale Course Search (courses.yale.edu) and the Yale University Publications bulletin (catalog.yale.edu) are
the institution's public course-catalog surfaces. Both are Leepfrog CourseLeaf tenancies — courses.yale.edu is a CNAME
to yale-fs.courseleaf.com and catalog.yale.edu to yale-public.courseleaf.com. The catalog data is Yale's and the surface
carries Yale's identity, but the platform, the software and any API belong to Leepfrog. No machine-readable contract is
saved under Yale's slug for it.
