Union Square Ventures' portfolio lists Stack Overflow, and our rollup scores it as Microsoft Active Directory

Union Square Ventures has 206 portfolio companies tracked on the network, and 77 publish APIs we index. The page rates that book at 38.7 on the Kin Score and 24.1 on Agent Readiness, in the thin band. One of its seven “strong” providers is wrong, and the error is ours. The entry named Stack Overflow, shown at 66.0, links to the slug active-directory, which is Microsoft Active Directory. The real Stack Overflow record scores 38.3, with an agent score of 28.6.

Four errors on one page

  • Stack Overflow resolves to Microsoft Active Directory (66.0 against a true 38.3).
  • Feedburner resolves to BetaList (25.3). The catalog has no Feedburner record, so that row should not carry a score at all.
  • The header contradicts the body. The top of the page says “203 publish APIs here”. The body says 77 publish and 126 do not. The 203 is those two added together.
  • The cohort brief lower on the page is stale, and it renders raw data. It counts 7 exemplar and 3 strong where the list above it counts 6 and 7. Its agent ranking prints {"score" => 69.6, "band" => "agent-native"} for Cloudflare, whose record now says 60.6. It also names Microsoft Active Directory outright in its top ten.

Swapping in the real Stack Overflow and dropping Feedburner moves the plain average of the 77 from 39.8 to 39.6, and the agent average from 25.0 to 25.3. Averages absorb this kind of error. Lists do not: a reader scanning the page sees Microsoft’s directory in a venture portfolio. Canvas deserves the same check. It supplies 146 of the portfolio’s 462 APIs (32%), and the entry is a bare name match pointing at Instructure’s LMS. I could not confirm that link from our own files. A wrong match there would matter far more.

The top of the book, corrected

Provider Kin Score Agent Readiness APIs
Twilio 86.0 47.1 55
Stripe 82.6 49.5 47
MongoDB 75.9 47.0 2
Cloudflare 75.6 60.6 25
Dwolla 73.5 55.3 19
Super Payments 72.0 38.4 1
Canvas 63.7 33.5 146
Jam 62.7 40.3 1
Viam 61.5 20.9 13
Coinbase 56.1 48.4 4

Cloudflare has the best agent score in the book, and Dwolla is second. Viam runs the other way, at 61.5 with only 20.9 on agents. Below the leaders, Neynar (33.4, agent 40.1) and Yieldmo (36.5, agent 37.0) score higher for agents than on the Kin Score overall.

The split inside the 77

48 companies are shown with published contracts, and they average 44.9 and 29.5 on agents. The other 29 are shown with a plain API count, and they average 31.4 and 17.6. The tail includes Lending Club at 14.1 and Tumblr at 7.9. Those are measures of first-party material we could read, and they say nothing about the products.

Takeaway

Name-to-slug resolution in portfolio rollups needs an audit, starting with the 10 entries where the portfolio name and the provider name disagree, and the cohort brief needs the same data as the list above it. The portfolio itself is a real group of API companies with a long, young tail. See it at apis.io/vcs/union-square-ventures/.
