ProcessMaker Vocabulary is a controlled vocabulary published by ProcessMaker on the APIs.io network, defining 16 terms.
Defined terms include Process, Request, Task, Screen, and Script.
14 terms carry alternate labels, so a consumer can resolve the synonyms ProcessMaker accepts to the canonical term.
A controlled vocabulary pins the words an API’s schemas, parameters and documentation use to one agreed definition each — the shared language a human or an agent needs to read the API the same way its authors do.
Terms
Process
A BPMN 2.0 compliant workflow definition that describes the sequence of activities, decisions, and events involved in completing a business objective. Processes are designed using the ProcessMaker Modeler and stored as BPMN XML.

Request
A running instance of a Process, also called a Case. Each time a process is started, a new Request is created to track its state, data, and progress through the workflow.

Task
A unit of work within a running Request that is assigned to a user or automated system for completion. Tasks are derived from BPMN Task nodes in the process definition and represented internally as process request tokens.

Screen
A form or display interface built using the ProcessMaker Screen Builder. Screens define the user interface for task forms, request detail views, and cancellation pages. Screens are BPMN 2.0 agnostic and reusable across multiple processes.
FormScreen Builder FormInterface
Script
A code block (PHP, JavaScript, Lua, R) that can be executed within a process via a Script Task BPMN element to perform data transformation, API calls, or business logic computations.
Script TaskCode Block
Environment Variable
A named key-value pair stored securely at the platform level and accessible to Scripts and processes without exposing sensitive values in process definitions. Commonly used for API keys, database credentials, and configuration values.

BPMN
Business Process Model and Notation - an ISO standard graphical notation for specifying business processes. ProcessMaker is BPMN 2.0 compliant, supporting events, gateways, tasks, sub-processes, message flows, and data objects.

Start Event
A BPMN element that marks the beginning of a process flow. ProcessMaker supports multiple start event types including none, message, signal, timer, and conditional. Each start event can be individually triggered via the API.

Gateway
A BPMN routing element that controls the divergence and convergence of process flow paths. ProcessMaker supports exclusive (XOR), inclusive (OR), parallel (AND), and event-based gateways.
Decision PointRouting Element
Process Category
A label used to organize and group related processes in the ProcessMaker library. Categories help users discover and manage processes at scale.

Watcher
A Screen feature that monitors a variable for changes and triggers an action (such as an API call or script execution) when the value changes. Watchers are configured per Screen and enable dynamic form behavior.
Signal
A BPMN signal is a broadcast notification that can be received by one or more processes or sub-processes. ProcessMaker exposes signals via the API to trigger intermediate catch events in running requests.
Collection
A premium ProcessMaker feature providing a structured data store (similar to a simple database table) that can be managed and queried within processes and screens without requiring an external database.
Data Collection
Data Connector
A premium ProcessMaker feature that provides a pre-built, configurable integration to external data sources and APIs (e.g., Salesforce, SAP, REST APIs) that can be used within processes and screens without custom scripting.
IntegrationConnector
Personal Access Token
A bearer token generated for a specific user account used to authenticate API requests to the ProcessMaker REST API. Tokens are scoped to the user's permissions.

Launchpad
A configurable home screen within ProcessMaker that provides users with quick access to processes they frequently start, their active tasks, and relevant dashboards.
