"instructorDescription": "This course examines the complexity and depth of the relationship between Buddhism and science, particularly the extent to which they can be considered compatible. This inquiry will be approached through the perspectives of Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist modernism, and the philosophy of science. The meaning of \"Buddhism and science itself depends on how one defines each term and what it means to put them side-by-side with the conjunction \"and. Nevertheless, for more than a century, scholars and practitioners have brought Buddhism and science together in the varied contexts of quantum mechanics, neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychology. In doing so, they have generally assumed some form of kinship or compatibility, despite the diverse traditions encompassed by Buddhism and the varied domains encompassed by science. Interpretations of this compatibility have spanned a wide spectrum: some argue that the core teachings of Buddhism, despite tensions with certain other doctrines, are not contradicted by modern scientific findings, while others claim that Buddhism can not only be corroborated by scientific discoveries but can also anticipate key future findings and reveal truths inaccessible to scientific methods alone.\nSeeking to foster a dynamic dialogue between Buddhism and science, the course will guide students in addressing several key questions: What do we mean by \"Buddhism and \"science, separately and together? How does Buddhism, often described as a science of the inner world, relate to the development of modern science? In the late modern period, Is Buddhism now obliged to be the most \"scientific religion ? Is Buddhism's perceived compatibility with science an essential and inevitable aspect of its mystique? And finally, why is it important for us to reflect on the tensions and convergences between Buddhism and science?\nTo guide students to think through these questions, the course will cover a range of topics including Buddhist epistemology and quantum mechanics, neuroscience and cognitive science in relation to mindfulness, technology and AI in Buddhist studies.",
