CarMax in ChatGPT

On 2026-02-27 CarMax became the first U.S. auto retailer with an app in the OpenAI ChatGPT App Store, putting its nationwide inventory of more than 45,000 vehicles and its instant-offer tool inside the ChatGPT conversation. Shoppers describe what they want in natural language, browse matching listings, and get a CarMax offer on a car they want to sell. OpenAI's Apps SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol, so CarMax operates an MCP server behind this app — but CarMax has never published the endpoint, has never named MCP in its own material, and offers no way for any agent other than ChatGPT to connect. It is a real agent surface that is not an open one.
