Legal & Compliance Tech lists 1,516 providers on its live page, and 898 of them (59%) carry the tag Compliance. Tags that name the law (Legal, Legal Tech, LegalTech, Legal Research, Law, Law Firms, Litigation, eDiscovery, Courts and similar) cover 293. Rank the vertical by Kin Score and two of those sit in the top 25: Google Vault, through eDiscovery and Legal Hold, and Vaquill AI. Eight are in the top 100. The page is mostly a compliance index, and much of that is companies listing compliance as a feature.
The median across 1,509 scored members is 24.1 on the Kin Score and 7.1 on Agent Readiness. There are 38 exemplars and 145 strong, against 510 emerging and 290 minimal. 715 are human-only.
Depth by function
These cuts come from tags and overlap, so they do not add up to the total.
| Function | Tagged | Median Kin | Median Agent | Worth opening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KYC, AML, sanctions, identity verification | 137 | 41.2 | 25.3 | Trulioo (70.2), Didit (65.1) |
| E-signature and contracts | 215 | 28.0 | 19.6 | Docusign (66.9), Conga (65.7) |
| GRC, privacy, audit | 113 | 26.2 | 5.4 | OneTrust (69.8), Drata (62.7) |
| Law and legal tech | 293 | 20.0 | 3.1 | Vaquill AI (70.7), Thomson Reuters (59.4) |
Three patterns
Regulated plumbing beats legal software. The KYC and sanctions median is more than double the legal one, and the median law-tagged provider scores 3.1 on agents. Yet one of the best agent scores in the whole vertical belongs to a legal data API: Vaquill AI at 63.0, third behind Space Frontiers at 68.9 and FeedOracle Technologies at 63.6. The gap inside legal is wide, and the opening is real.
The tag pulls in neighbours. Uphold, first at 81.4, is a crypto and payments platform tagged KYC and Compliance. Adobe, second at 78.6, arrives on E-Signature among creative and marketing tags. Postman, third at 77.9, is an API platform whose record lists Compliance among 46 tags. ControlUp is endpoint management. None of these records is wrong, and each tag is a reasonable description. The result is still a poor answer to “who are the best legal APIs?”
Some matches are plain noise. Nantero, tagged Defunct and described as a nanotechnology memory company, scores 0.0 and is here. It carries no compliance or legal tag, and Intellectual Property looks like the path in. The same tag fits Clarivate, where it makes sense. Fourteen members score exactly 0.0.
What is ours to fix
Membership is computed from tags, and it treats one Compliance tag on a 46-tag record the same as a company whose whole product is compliance. A weight for tag position or share, or a split between legal and compliance, would give the ranking a more honest top. The API numbers also disagree: the page says 11,982, members list 12,075 API entries, and their api_count fields sum to about 2,344.
Where to start
For screening, open IBANforge (73.3) or SanctionsKit (61.0). For statutes, open Vaquill AI. For GRC evidence, open Drata or anecdotes (67.1).
Takeaway
Read this vertical by function and ignore its overall rank. Filter by what you need at apis.io/industries/legal-compliance/.
