The Nordics region now maps 165 providers, up from 99 when this blog last looked in August. Only four of them score strong or better. And the page’s own description names Spotify and Mojang as proof of the region’s influence on API design, while neither company is a member of it.
That is the finding. The region is bigger, and it is still missing some of the companies it is proudest of.
The top of the region
| Provider | APIs | Band | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klarna | 6 | exemplar | 71.8 |
| Cogny | 1 | exemplar | 69.7 |
| Visma | 7 | strong | 64.2 |
| Tibber | 1 | strong | 55.8 |
| Worksome | 2 | developing | 54.2 |
| Northmill | 1 | developing | 53.7 |
Below that, 33 providers sit in developing, 24 thin, 34 emerging and 67 minimal. The median is 14.4. 88 of the 165 publish no API on the network yet, and the member rows add up to 306 APIs, with Tietoevry (48), Cambio Healthcare Systems (38) and DSV (29) carrying the most.
The August post argued the Nordics “out-describe most people”. At 99 providers that read as true. At 165 it reads as a claim about the first page of the table. Tibber, 65.8 in August, is 55.8 now. Bokio has dropped from 58.5 to 45.7 in the region listing.
How membership works, and what it misses
A provider joins the region on one of three signals: a geographic tag (123 providers), a structured headquarters field (64), or a name pattern (13). There is no fourth path. A company that never tags itself Nordic and has no HQ field does not appear, whatever its prose says.
That is how these end up outside:
| Provider | APIs | Band | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustly Group | 1 | strong | 66.4 |
| Tink | 9 | strong | 62.3 |
| Sinch | 10 | developing | 51.2 |
| Spotify | 1 | developing | 48.5 |
| Mojang | 14 | thin | 26.3 |
All five are Swedish companies. Trustly’s own catalog description says Stockholm, a licensed Swedish payment institution, and the region still does not count it, because the word lives in a sentence rather than a field. Add Trustly and Tink and the region’s strong-or-better count goes from four to six, and Nordic open banking looks as strong as the region’s reputation says it is.
What the region is actually good at
Payments and finance carry the top: Klarna, Northmill, Autopay, Safello, Enable Banking, Holvi, Atlar. Business software is the second pillar, with Visma, Worksome, Relex and IFS. The universities are a real third, Helsinki with 19 APIs, Gothenburg, Uppsala, Lund, NTNU and DTU, which is a deeper public research footprint than most regions of this size show.
Takeaway
The Nordics are not a volume story and never were. They are a quality-at-the-top story, and that top is under-counted because membership reads fields, not sentences. The fix on our side is to backfill HQ for the Stockholm fintechs. The fix on theirs is the same one that moves a Kin Score: say where you are, in a place a machine reads.
