Swagger Codegen Vocabulary
Vocabulary for Swagger Codegen and the Swagger Generator API. Covers code generation concepts, generator types, language targets, template engine terminology, and OpenAPI specification integration.
15 Terms
Updated 2026-05-02
Swagger Codegen Vocabulary is a controlled vocabulary published by Swagger Codegen on the APIs.io network, defining 15 terms.
Defined terms include Swagger Codegen, Generator, Client SDK, Server Stub, and Mustache Template.
A controlled vocabulary pins the words an API’s schemas, parameters and documentation use to one agreed definition each — the shared language a human or an agent needs to read the API the same way its authors do.
Terms
Swagger Codegen
An open-source, template-driven tool that generates client SDKs, server stubs, and API documentation by parsing OpenAPI/Swagger specification definitions. Maintained by SmartBear and the community.
Generator
A language- or framework-specific module within Swagger Codegen that produces code artifacts for a specific target (e.g., python, java, spring, nodejs-server). Each generator has its own configurable options.
Client SDK
A generated library in a specific programming language that provides typed, ready-to-use classes and methods for calling an API described by an OpenAPI specification.
Server Stub
Generated boilerplate server code in a specific framework that provides the structure (routes, models, handlers) for implementing an API described by an OpenAPI specification.
Mustache Template
A logic-less template language used by Swagger Codegen to generate code output. Templates (.mustache files) are interpolated with the intermediate model to produce language-specific source code files.
Intermediate Model
The in-memory data structure produced by Swagger Codegen when it parses an OpenAPI specification. The intermediate model is passed to Mustache templates for rendering. Accessible via the /model endpoint.
Generation Request
The JSON request body submitted to the Swagger Generator API containing the target language, generator type, OpenAPI spec (inline or URL), and optional configuration options.
GenerationRequest.lang
The required field in a GenerationRequest specifying the target language or framework identifier (e.g., "python", "java", "spring", "typescript-axios").
Codegen Version
The version of the Swagger Codegen engine to use — V2 for OpenAPI 2.x (Swagger) specifications and V3 for OpenAPI 3.x specifications.
OpenAPI Specification
The machine-readable API description format (formerly called Swagger) that Swagger Codegen parses as its primary input. Supports versions 1.x, 2.x (Swagger), and 3.x (OpenAPI).
CLI Option
A configurable parameter for a specific generator, such as packageName, groupId, or dateLibrary. Available options vary by generator and are discoverable via the /options endpoint.
Package Name
A generator option specifying the top-level package, module, or namespace name in the generated code. Commonly used in Python, Go, and Java generators.
Maven Plugin
A Swagger Codegen integration for Apache Maven that runs code generation as part of the Maven build lifecycle, enabling automated SDK generation in Java projects.
Gradle Plugin
A Swagger Codegen integration for Gradle that enables automated code generation as a Gradle build task.
OpenAPI Generator
A community fork of Swagger Codegen (split in 2018) that is maintained separately at OpenAPITools/openapi-generator. Supports additional languages and frameworks while sharing common ancestry with Swagger Codegen.
