Readme Vocabulary
Controlled vocabulary for the ReadMe developer hub platform, covering content surfaces (guides, reference, changelog), AI features, the MCP layer, branching/versioning, and the developer metrics surface.
32 Terms
Updated 2026-05-22
ReadMe Vocabulary is a controlled vocabulary published by ReadMe on the APIs.io network, defining 32 terms.
Defined terms include Project, Hub, Branch, API Definition, and API Reference.
A controlled vocabulary pins the words an API’s schemas, parameters and documentation use to one agreed definition each — the shared language a human or an agent needs to read the API the same way its authors do.
Terms
Project
A ReadMe-hosted developer hub. The top-level container for content, settings, and integrations.
Hub
Marketing name for a published ReadMe project, including custom domain, theme, and navigation.
Branch
A versioned line of ReadMe content. Replaces the legacy "version" concept and underpins branching, review, and merge workflows.
API Definition
An OpenAPI, Swagger, or Postman document uploaded to a branch. Drives the API reference, Try-It console, and the project's MCP server.
API Reference
Auto-rendered, interactive documentation generated from an API Definition.
Try-It
The interactive console embedded in API reference pages that issues live requests against the provider's API.
Guide
A knowledge-base page in ReadMe's flavored Markdown / MDX, grouped under a Category.
Recipe
A step-by-step interactive walk-through pairing prose and live API calls.
Changelog
A timestamped post on a branch describing added, fixed, improved, deprecated, or removed functionality.
Custom Page
A standalone page (Markdown or raw HTML) outside the guides/reference tree.
Category
A sidebar grouping that organizes Guides or Reference pages.
Reusable Content
Blocks of content reused across pages (Pro+) or projects (Enterprise Group library).
MDX Component
A custom React component embeddable in ReadMe Markdown (Pro+).
Bi-Directional Sync
Two-way connection between a ReadMe project and a Git repository (GitHub or GitLab) so edits flow in either direction.
rdme
ReadMe's official command-line interface and GitHub Action for syncing OpenAPI definitions and content into a project.
Metrics SDK
Server-side library (Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, .NET) that captures API request/response logs and POSTs them as HAR entries to the Metrics API.
Developer Dashboard
ReadMe's UI for investigating per-key / per-email API usage backed by Metrics SDK logs.
My Requests
End-user view of their recent API requests, rendered directly inside the docs.
Personalized Docs Webhook
Customer-implemented webhook that returns the logged-in user's API keys and variables so ReadMe can pre-fill the docs.
Agent
ReadMe's AI documentation assistant that drafts and edits Guides, API Reference, and Custom Pages, supporting multi-page edits and multiple chat windows.
Inline AI
In-editor selection-based AI rewriting (shorten, expand, improve).
AI Linter
Style-guide enforcement powered by AI; flags pages that fail the project's custom rules.
Docs Audit
Project-wide scoring of pages against a customizable style guide.
GitHub AI Writer
GitHub integration that automatically proposes documentation updates when a pull request changes the codebase.
Ask AI
End-user-facing AI Q&A assistant powered by OpenAI, available as a $150/mo add-on.
MCP
Model Context Protocol — the standard ReadMe uses to expose docs and APIs to AI tools.
ReadMe MCP Server
ReadMe-hosted MCP server letting AI tools search, read, and update ReadMe documentation.
Project MCP Server
Per-customer MCP server auto-provisioned by ReadMe so end-user AI tools can read, search, and call that project's API.
LLMs.txt
Machine-readable index of all pages (Markdown) and endpoints (OpenAPI) published at /llms.txt to control how AI language models interpret a hub's documentation.
Broken Link Checker
Built-in tool that scans the project for broken internal and external links.
Enterprise Group
Enterprise tier construct that combines multiple child projects under one parent hub with shared navigation, design, and reusable content.
Personalized Docs
Mode in which the docs are pre-filled with the logged-in user's API key, variables, and request history.
