Sigma ships a first-party remote MCP server that lets an AI assistant search the organization for workbooks, data models and warehouse tables, describe their columns and semantics, and run governed queries against them in natural language. Permissions are inherited from the caller's Sigma account; queries are tagged "kind":"mcp" in the warehouse so cost can be attributed.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol Anthropic introduced for connecting LLM-based agents to external tools and data sources. Providers publish MCP servers that expose their API surface as structured, discoverable tools — an MCP-compatible client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, Continue, etc.) can connect to the server and call its tools without any per-provider integration code.
