The Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) is Ontario's health-sector privacy law, in force since 2004 and overseen by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. It governs how health information custodians collect, use, and disclose personal health information, and establishes patients' rights of access and correction. As Canadian healthcare is province-regulated, PHIPA is the most prominent of several provincial health-privacy regimes (alongside the federal PIPEDA), and it is the consent-and-access framework Canadian health-data APIs operate under.
