Project Gutenberg and the Gutendex API are entirely free and open. There are no pricing tiers, subscription plans, or commercial offerings. The Gutendex API is a volunteer-maintained open-source project released under the MIT license. Direct access to Project Gutenberg content is also free with no registration required. For production workloads, self-hosting the Gutendex server using the open-source code is recommended.

Operators can deploy their own Gutendex instance using the open-source MIT-licensed Django application. This provides full control over availability, performance, and data freshness. Project Gutenberg publishes nightly XML/RDF catalog archives that Gutendex downloads and indexes.
