General Catalyst has 597 portfolio companies tracked on apis.io, and 596 of them are on the network. 193 of them publish APIs. Those 193 rate 32.2 as a portfolio, thin, with an average Kin Score of 37.6 and an average Agent Readiness of 24.1. Ten score exemplar, 18 strong, and 9 are agent-native. Across all 561 profiled companies, including those with nothing published, the rating falls to 15.3.
The firm’s stated thesis is “Global Resilience”: healthcare, energy, defense and AI, the critical systems under modern society. The API record runs almost in the opposite direction. The portfolio’s best API surfaces come from the horizontal software it backed a decade or more ago.
Who leads
| Company | Kin Score | Agent Readiness | APIs |
|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | 93.2 | 54.0 | 109 |
| Anthropic | 88.8 | 46.7 | 6 |
| BigCommerce | 81.2 | 61.1 | 68 |
| Stripe | 81.1 | 58.3 | 48 |
| GitLab | 81.0 | 48.0 | 13 |
| Mistral | 47.7 | 26.5 | 13 |
| Samsara | 31.8 | 18.6 | 1 |
| Anduril | 30.2 | 19.6 | 1 |
| Mercor | 19.5 | 12.9 | 7 |
| Hippocratic AI | 12.1 | 2.5 | 0 |
| Helsing | 10.2 | 0.6 | 8 |
The top five are a CRM, a model lab, a commerce platform, a payments company and a DevOps platform, and together they hold 244 APIs. The companies closest to the resilience thesis are near the bottom: Anduril and Helsing in defense, Hippocratic AI in health, Samsara in physical operations. Hippocratic AI publishes nothing. Anduril has one API page.
Three observations
Agent readiness tracks category, not thesis. The nine agent-native companies are payments, data and developer tools: Stripe, AgentMail (64.4), Tabs, NewStore, Lean Technologies, OneSchema, ThoughtSpot, Amigo and Goodstack. The defense and health bets are human-only or agent-aware. For a firm that also backs AI labs, the portfolio’s own APIs are mostly not built for agents yet.
Canva shows what one contract can do. Canva scores 69.4, with an Agent Readiness of 63.3, on a single API page. Having many APIs is not what earns the number. Being callable, documented and discoverable is.
Helsing’s eight APIs are ours, and they are not APIs. The catalog lists 8 API pages for Helsing: Altra, Centaur, CA-1 Europa, HF-1, HX-2 and others. Their descriptions are product descriptions of reconnaissance software, an AI pilot and autonomous aircraft. None of them is a developer interface. Contract quality and governance both score 0.0. Because of those pages, the portfolio counts Helsing as “publishing”. That is a defect in our harvest, and it inflates the 193.
Takeaway
General Catalyst’s API footprint is strong at the top and thin in the middle, and its thesis companies are the thinnest part. What would move the portfolio is the defense and health companies publishing even one callable contract each, as Canva did. That would matter most where an agent integration is the product’s real path into government and hospital systems. On our side, we should reclassify Helsing’s product pages and recompute the publishing count. We also need to reconcile the overview’s “remaining 403”, which does not equal 597 minus 193.
