Legal & Compliance Tech on APIs.io: 1,069 Providers Selling Proof

Legal & Compliance Tech indexes 1,069 providers publishing 4,936 APIs — legal software plus the compliance, RegTech and risk platforms companies use to stay inside the rules.

It is a vertical almost entirely composed of companies whose product is evidence.

The cohort

Provider APIs Band Score
Trulioo 19 exemplar 80.8
Postman 39 exemplar 75.8
Microsoft Purview 44 exemplar 74.0
Ironclad 13 exemplar 69.6
Uphold 7 exemplar 68.8
Remote 101 strong 62.0

Trulioo at 80.8 is the highest-scoring provider in any vertical covered this week. Nineteen APIs doing identity verification and KYC across jurisdictions.

Postman is in this vertical, and it should be

Seeing an API tooling company sit third in Legal & Compliance looks like a tagging accident. It is not.

API governance became a compliance function. Somewhere between the security mandates, the data-residency rules and the audit requirements, “which APIs do we have, who can call them, what do they expose, and can you prove it” stopped being an engineering concern and became something an auditor asks about. Postman’s governance and reporting surface answers that question, which puts it in the same conversation as Microsoft Purview.

That is the quiet story of this vertical: compliance tooling and developer tooling converged, and neither category noticed for a while.

What has shifted

Identity leads, again. Trulioo topping this vertical and Banking (covered Friday) is the same finding twice. Cross-jurisdiction identity proofing is the hard, high-value, heavily-regulated problem, and the companies solving it are among the best describers on the network.

Data governance became API-shaped. Microsoft Purview publishes 44 APIs at 74.0. Cataloguing, classifying and applying policy to enterprise data is now something you do programmatically across an estate, not something a governance team does in a spreadsheet quarterly.

Contract lifecycle went machine-readable. Ironclad at 69.6 sits in the odd position of being a contracts company in the legal sense inside a catalog about contracts in the API sense. Both are agreements that need versioning, approval workflow and an audit trail. The parallel is closer than the pun suggests.

Employment compliance is a real category. Remote publishes 101 APIs — the largest surface in the cohort — covering global employment, payroll and the regulatory obligations of hiring across borders. It scores 62.0, strong, and appears in Human Resources & Payroll as well.

Takeaway

4,936 APIs across 1,069 providers, led by identity verification, with an API tooling company sitting third because API governance turned into a compliance function. Everyone in this vertical sells the same underlying thing: the ability to prove something to someone who can fine you.
