The inversion
Every other large vertical on the network publishes multiple APIs per provider. Developer Tools indexes 2,860 providers and 22,192 APIs — roughly eight each. Telecommunications runs about seven. Artificial Intelligence, around three.
Biotechnology runs 0.85.
A thousand companies doing computational biology, and the median one publishes nothing callable at all. This is the only major vertical on the network where the provider count exceeds the API count, and it is the single most interesting fact in the catalog about this sector.

Why the sector publishes so little
The data is the asset. In devtools, the API is the product and openness is distribution. In drug discovery, the compound library, the assay results and the trial data are the company’s valuation. Publishing a well-described API to your proprietary dataset is closer to giving away the balance sheet.
The tooling grew up in academia. Bioinformatics runs on file formats, command-line pipelines and batch jobs — FASTQ, BAM, VCF, workflow managers. Seqera Labs, the company behind Nextflow, sits in this cohort precisely because pipelines rather than endpoints are the native abstraction. A well-designed REST surface was never the deliverable.
Regulation shapes the interface. Clinical data moves under protocols that assume auditability and controlled access. That does not preclude a good API, but it does mean nobody gets rewarded for a public one.
Where the strong entries are
The pattern among the top scorers is consistent: they are infrastructure for biotech, not biotech.
Amazon HealthOmics is genomics storage and compute. TetraScience is a lab data platform. Seqera is workflow orchestration. One Codex is metagenomic analysis. These companies sell picks and shovels to drug discovery, and picks-and-shovels companies have to be callable to be adopted.
The therapeutics companies themselves are largely in the 1,054 providers the overview does not name.
Takeaway
1,060 providers, 905 APIs, no exemplars, and a ceiling seventeen points below the other big verticals. Biotechnology is the clearest case on the network of a large, well-capitalised, deeply technical sector that has not made its surface callable — and the companies scoring best are the ones selling infrastructure to it rather than doing the science.
