The Construction vertical at apis.io/industries/construction/ tracks 50 providers and 106 APIs across four sub-sectors — infrastructure and heavy civil, environmental and water infrastructure, engineering and project management, and industrial construction.
It has something aerospace, retail, energy, and consumer goods all lack: an exemplar-band provider. Exactly one.
The bands
| Band | Providers | APIs |
|---|---|---|
| Exemplar | Autodesk 75.8 | 69 |
| Developing | Trimble 54.7, Taylor Morrison 47.1 | 15, 8 |
| Thin | Tetra Tech 38.0, AECOM 31.1, Beacon Roofing 30.3 | 1–5 |
| Emerging | Carlisle 24.2, Lennar 19.1, Century Communities 16.5, Comfort Systems 16.5, Dycom 16.5, Parsons 16.4 | 1–2 |
| Minimal | Vulcan Materials 12.1 | 0 |
Autodesk publishes 69 APIs — 65% of the entire vertical’s surface — and scores 75.8. The other 49 companies split the remaining 37 APIs between them.
One software company carrying a physical industry
This is the sharpest version of a pattern that ran through the whole week. Autodesk is not a construction company; it is a software company that sells to construction. Trimble (54.7, 15 APIs) is the same — positioning, surveying, and field technology.
Remove those two and the vertical is: 33 companies with 22 APIs and a ceiling of 47.1.
The actual builders — AECOM (1 API, 31.1), Parsons (1, 16.4), Dycom (1, 16.5), Comfort Systems (1, 16.5), Vulcan Materials (0, 12.1) — publish almost nothing. These are firms running billion-dollar infrastructure programs with enormous coordination requirements, and their integration layer is not an API.
What’s shifted
Three patterns:
- BIM created a real API surface. Autodesk’s 69 APIs exist because Building Information Modeling made the model a shared, queryable artifact across architects, engineers, and contractors. That is the only genuine multi-party data-exchange problem in construction that got solved with APIs.
- Homebuilders score at the floor. Lennar (19.1), Century Communities (16.5), Taylor Morrison (47.1 and the outlier). Residential construction sells to consumers, not systems.
- Engineering firms are consultancies, not platforms. AECOM, Tetra Tech, and Parsons sell billable hours and deliverables. There is no product surface to expose.

Takeaway
50 providers, 106 APIs, one exemplar — and that exemplar is a software vendor holding up the average for an entire physical industry. Construction’s API layer is Autodesk’s API layer, and the companies actually building things have not needed one.
