Those 82 providers publish 36 APIs between them.

That ratio is the story. Fewer than one API for every two companies, in a sector that runs continent-scale physical infrastructure generating telemetry every second of every day.

Shell alone publishes 12 of the sector’s 36 APIs — a third of the total from one company. BP, a direct peer of comparable scale, publishes one and scores 22.4. BWX Technologies publishes zero.

What’s shifted

Three patterns worth naming:

  1. The gap inside the majors is enormous. Shell at 60.8 and BP at 22.4 are the same kind of company operating in the same markets under the same disclosure regimes. A 38-point spread between them is a strategy difference, not an industry constraint.

  2. Tesla is classified here and behaves like a tech company. Four APIs and a 48.2 — modest numbers, but it is the only provider in the vertical whose API program looks designed for external developers rather than for partners under contract.

  3. The midstream and E&P operators cluster at the floor. Energy Transfer, Valero, Cheniere, Antero, APA — all thin or emerging, all one to three APIs. These businesses move physical commodities through fixed infrastructure; their integration happens through EDI, long-term contracts, and scheduled file drops. The API never became necessary.

The telemetry that never arrives

Utilities and grid operators generate some of the richest real-time operational data in any industry: load, generation mix, outage state, pricing nodes, interconnection queues. Almost none of it is in this catalog as a described API.

Where that data does reach the public, it typically arrives through a government or regulator — a pattern visible in the government vertical rather than this one. The operators themselves are not the publishers.

82 of the largest energy companies in the world publish 36 APIs between them, one company accounts for a third of those, and the sector ceiling is a single strong-band score. Energy is the clearest example in the catalog of an industry where the data exists, the scale justifies it, and the API program simply was never built.
