Natron Energy was a Santa Clara, California sodium-ion battery company spun out of Stanford University in 2012 by Colin Wessells, building cells based on a Prussian blue analog (PBA) chemistry that promised long cycle life, fast charge and discharge, non-flammability, and a domestic supply chain free of lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Natron's product line was aimed at critical power and industrial backup applications, including the BlueTray 4000 — a 48 VDC, 4 kW (6 kW peak), 50 V rack-mounted sodium-ion battery tray — and the BlueRack 250 / 500 kW battery cabinets targeted at data center UPS, peak shaving, and EV fast-charging support. The company stood up the first U.S. sodium-ion mass-production line in Holland, Michigan in 2024 (a converted Clarios facility, ~600 MW/yr nameplate) and announced a planned $1.4 billion factory in Kingsboro (Rocky Mount), North Carolina that was expected to create more than 1,000 jobs. Investors included Khosla Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, United Airlines Ventures, Aramco Ventures, and Sherwood Partners. After ~$373M raised, on August 27, 2025 Natron's board determined that ongoing fundraising and order-pipeline efforts were unsuccessful; the company filed a WARN notice and permanently ceased operations on September 3, 2025, terminating staff at both the Holland, MI and Santa Clara, CA sites and cancelling the North Carolina factory. Sherwood Partners, the largest shareholder, took over wind-down and asset disposition. Natron was a battery hardware OEM with no public developer API, SDK, GitHub organization, or programmable cloud surface.
